New York City has to be one of the most exciting and energetic places on the planet. You can see a lot of the city in a few days or you could stay for months and never run out of things to do. As you prepare for your trip to the city here are a few things that I always take with me and hope you find them helpful as well.
You will need really good shoes for walking because you will do lots. There are taxis, buses and the subway that you will be taking as well but you will find plenty of walking in between. The terrain is flat and all sidewalks so really good walking shoes are your best choice. For an evening out in dress shoes I highly recommend taking a taxi.
I also take a New York City guide book with maps and explanation of places. I use the maps all the time when figuring out where something is and then figuring out which subway to take to get there. This may be a little old school as cell phones have taken the place of guide books for now.
NYC is full of fashion so I usually dress nicer than I do at home, with a little more flare as well. It is also the city of black, lots of black clothing and I tend to wear more black there than I do at home.
My camera is always a must, there are so many fantastic sights to take pictures of and you never know when the inspiration to click a picture will be. A day bag is another good item. While traveling in the city I usually do not take my purse but something larger to carry my camera, wallet, guide book and with plenty of room for the shopping that will inevitably be done.
After a long day in the city I am glad that I remembered my sleep mask. The city is bright all night long and I have a hard time sleeping with so much light. It is also the city that never sleeps so there is noise around the clock, so if you are sensitive to noise you may want to bring something for that as well.
