While visiting the beach it is very important to consider how to protect your skin from the sun. If you are planning to be on the beach more than 15 minutes, sun protection is necessary. The sun’s UV rays are harmful to the skin and tanning is considered damage to the skin. Burns are extremely harmful and prolonged sun exposure can lead to skin cancer. Here are a few simple ways to protect your skin from the sun and help you enjoy your visit to the beach.

Using Sunscreen – Find a SPF that is right for you and your skin type. Local stores sell many different brands and types of sunscreens and sun blocks. These are made to be used as a barricade for the skin and must be used according to the directions on the container. And remember to reapply!
Wearing Protective Clothing – Wearing clothing on the beach works in the same way as sun block, you are covering your skin to reduce sun exposure. Finding a nice airy long sleeve shirt, dress, or wrap, will help to prevent your skins exposure to the sun.
Wearing a Hat – A nice wide brimmed sunhat can offer a lot of protection from the sun. It will also offer a little relief from the heat. You can view a hat as movable shade, going with you wherever you go.
Using an Umbrella – Taking a beach umbrella, a regular umbrella, or a parasol will help to provide shade and keep you out of the sun.
Avoiding Certain Times – The sun’s rays are most intense during the hours of 10am – 2pm. By staying in the shade or indoors during these hours will greatly reduce your exposure to harmful sun rays.
